I love to listen to podcasts. I usually listen during the week, either while getting ready for work or at the gym. While I would love to read books more often than I currently do, I find podcasts quick and easy to listen to. Even on the hectic weekday mornings of getting myself ready and working with my wife to get our two kids ready for school and out the door on time, I find that I can still squeeze in a little listening time.
I try to learn from a variety of people and take things that I can apply to my own life. There are so many smart and successful people out there. If they are willing to share their personal stories of strategies, success stories, failures, and valuable ideas, I’m going to listen.
I put together a list of my favorite top 5 podcast episodes that I listened to this summer. I’ve linked to each of their websites below where you can listen. But, you can also find any of the episodes by searching on your favorite podcast app. Happy listening!
My Top 5 Podcast Episodes of the Summer:
- Podcast: Invest In The Best / Episode 143: “Joe McLean- How to be a Pro’s Pro”
Great perspective on sports, coaching, relationships, and finance rolled together. Joe McCLean shares how he chooses his clients wisely by setting strict standards, setting boundaries, being honest, and making sure they are a “Pro’s Pro.” They are usually highly successful athletes and business professionals. The old school term of a Pro’s Pro is undervalued, but the best leaders live this way at all times. You’ll find out more about this term, and what makes a Pro’s Pro in this episode.
- Podcast: Masters in Business / Episode: “Scott Galloway Discusses the Algebra of Happiness”
Professor Scott Galloway of the NYU Stern School of Business and Author of “The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google” shares the real meaning of the pursuit of success, love, and meaning. He gives us an in depth analysis on the best and worst concepts while pursuing success, and how you can’t put a dollar value on real happiness. The most successful people that are genuinely happy lean heavily on gratitude. Also, it’s ok to be completely stressed from the ages of 25-45. Find out the life stages of stress and happiness in this episode!
- Podcast: Positive University / Episode: “Living to be a Miracle with Austin Hatch”
One of the more powerful podcast episodes I’ve ever listened to. The odds of surviving two plane crashes is one-in-11 quadrillion and 560 trillion. Austin Hatch beat all odds, but lost his mom, dad, brother, and sister is two separate plane crashes. Listen to Austin as he talks about the two plane crashes, and the miracle he continues to live for others. Need some perspective in your life? This is a must listen. From high school hoops star and Michigan commit to learning how to walk again and living each day trying to make his family proud. Truly inspirational.
- Podcast: Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations / Episode: “Oprah and Eckhart Tolle: Acceptance of Troubled Times”
The two discuss how we need to accept stressful times in the present moment. Bad habits such as complaining, pointing fingers, and throwing temper tantrums will not solve the difficult issue at hand. I really enjoyed the techniques they shared on how to control the ego and stop your brain from telling an untrue narrative or adding extra baggage. Up at night worrying, living in the past, or concerned about the future? Listen to this.
- Podcast: The WOJ Pod / Episode: “Doc Rivers and Erik Spoelstra”
Two NBA championship coaches give their high level insight on what makes successful teams. Both stressed support from ownership and management was crucial early on in their careers while building these championship teams such as the Celtics and Heat. It was really interesting to hear how they’re constantly evolving with the new generation of players coming into the NBA. They talked about the importance and impact of leading a team meeting, shorter attention spans among individuals, and committing “sunk cost fallacy” with certain players.
